Animation Studies and Research Degrees

History, theory and research of animation as an academic and practice-led discipline. This list includes degrees dedicated to the specialization, degrees with an officially named pathway, and broader degrees in which it is a central verified component. Each card says which.

Listed alphabetically by school. This directory is not a ranking — editorial selections are published separately under Top Schools. What we list

No verified programs here yet

We list a program only after checking its award and details on the institution's own website. Missing information never counts as a match.

What animation studies and research covers

  • Animation history and theory
  • Research methods
  • Practice-based research where officially offered
  • A dissertation or thesis

This is an academic and research field: programs emphasize history, theory and research, sometimes with practice-based routes. Check whether practical work is part of the degree.

Dedicated degree, official pathway or broader degree

  • Dedicated degree (0): The degree itself is in this field.
  • Official pathway (0): An officially named concentration, pathway or major inside the degree.
  • Broader degree with animation (0): A broader degree in which animation is a central, verified component of the official title or curriculum.

A single module is never counted as a pathway or as substantial curriculum. One program can appear under several specializations; it is still one listing.

Admissions and portfolios

Studies and research programs ask for academic writing and, at doctoral level, a research proposal; practice-based routes may add a portfolio.

Requirements are recorded item by item on each program profile — required, optional, pathway-specific or explicitly not required. If a school does not publish its policy, we say so. Admissions and portfolio guide
